Kyrgyzstan and Suusamyr Valley

Kyrgyzstan, officially the Kyrgyz Republic and also known as Kirghizia is a country in Central Asia. Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country with montainous terrain. It is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west and southwest, Tajikistan to the southwest and China to the East. Its capital and largest city is Bishkek.

The Suusamyr Valley (2,000-3,200m) is one of the most exquisite and beloved areas in Kyrgyzstan silk road. Located in the inner Tian Shan Mountains, this valley stretches for a total of 155km between the Kyrgyz and Talas Ala-Too ridges.

In the summer, the entire valley is decorated in tall, lush grass, making it some of the best pastureland in the whole country, popular with local nomads as well as mountain climbers and travelers looking for a peaceful spot to enjoy the crisp mountain air. With winter comes heavy snowfall and as such, lots of good skiing.

Climate and Weather

Suusamyr Alpine valley is located in 130km from Bishkek at the altitude of 2,200-2,600 meters above the sea level, surrounded by three mountain ranges that give it the shape of a triangle. The north side of the valley is the longest, it equals 100km, and runs along the ridge Kyrgyz Ala-Too, from the south-west of the valley limits the range Suusamyr-Too, and from the south-east closes Jumgal Too. The area of the valley is more than 4,000km2.

In January the average temperature is minus 20-21 °C. The winters are long and snowy, almost 6 months of the year is thick and powdery snow. Due to climate and variety of terrain slopes, the Suusamyr Valley is a real paradise for skiers and snowboarders.

Accessibility

Manas International Airport near Bishkek is the main international airport, with services to Moscow, Tashkent, Almaty, Istambul and Dubai. No EU airline has direct flights to Kyrgyzstan (as of 2020). Travel between the European Union and Kyrgyzstan includes changing aircraft, most often in Moscow or Istanbul. There are plenty of flights by Aeroflot and Turkish Airlines that fly into Bishkek from Europe and Asia. From US, The Emirates do have a route to Bishkek via Dubai.
